Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce, LLC (A&W) is a growing San Diego, California based grower/shipper of fresh produce (primarily tomatoes, strawberry, raspberry and blackberry) with production locations in California (Watsonville, Santa Maria, Oxnard) and Mexico (Baja and central Mexico). A&W’s mission is to steward resources while providing customers and consumers equitably produced flavorful, attractive, safe and affordable produce 365 days a year.
This full-time position will be based in Hollister, California with occasional travel to other locations within California and Mexico. The Laboratory and Greenhouse Manager will oversee all laboratory and greenhouse activities and interface with the Research Field Manager to ensure flow of material (plants, fruit) from the laboratory/greenhouse to the field, and from the field to the laboratory/greenhouse.
- M.S. degree in an agricultural related discipline preferred, or B.S. degree in an agricultural related discipline with relevant experience may be considered
- Must be able to lead and work in a team
- Command of Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing clearly and effectively
- Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish highly desirable
- Strong work ethic
- Plant tissue culture and propagation experience
- Ability to learn and use systems for label printing and inventory management
- Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment and other tools needed for agricultural research projects
- Ability and motivation to learn new technologies
- Detailed oriented, accurate, reliable with ability to plan ahead and multitask
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
- A valid passport and the ability to travel internationally without restrictions is required
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in the laboratory, office, greenhouse and field
- Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in the field or greenhouse
- Potential allergens, pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in the greenhouse
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
- Responsible for laboratory/greenhouse operation and maintenance
- Responsible for operation and maintenance of research equipment
- Review and write protocols for laboratory and greenhouse
- Plan for and assist in the execution of all laboratory and greenhouse work
- Update and maintain the Laboratory Safety Plan/Manual and the SDS Manual
- Oversee laboratory/greenhouse safety and safety compliance
- Ensure all laboratory and greenhouse reagents, materials and supplies are available when needed
- Responsible for greenhouse irrigation management, pesticide and fertilizer applications
- Ensure that the laboratory/greenhouse is cleaned/sanitized and kept in an orderly manner
- Maintain, secure, and care for as necessary, site facilities
- Effectively communicate periodically the status of projects and work activities
- Responsible for capital and operational budgets for laboratory/greenhouse operations
