Job Description: 

We are conducting a search for Barnes Farming Corporation’s next Logistics Manager. Barnes Farming Corporation is a well-established and respected agribusiness firm located in Spring Hope, North Carolina which began operations in 1960. Since then under the leadership of Carson and Johnny Barnes, the organization has grown to become a leader in the sweet potato industry world-wide.  Today, the Barnes family manages farms in 5 North Carolina counties that include 15,000 acres of sweet potatoes, tobacco, peanuts, soybeans, wheat, watermelons and a variety of organic products.  Farm Pak Products (also managed by the Barnes Family) operates as an affiliate sales organization focusing on sweet potato sales in domestic and international markets.

We are looking for a Logistics Manager with high energy and thought process on the big picture.  This is a newly created full-time job. The position of Logistics Manager works with Operations, Accounting, Sales, warehouse staff, shipping companies, and clients to ensure timely and accurate shipping of outbound products for sale, and working with the various purchasing agents in the company to ensure timely and accurate delivery of inbound purchased products.

Responsibilities include managing all domestic and international shipping, as well as all of the associated support and related functions. A large percentage of the day will be spent communicating with parties and carriers to monitor shipment performance and adjust as necessary to keep customers more than satisfied by delivering product on time, complete, and without damage.  Working with carriers will also be essential to negotiate the best service and rate levels to help maximize profitability for our company.

Requirements: 
  • Ten years logistics experience in a produce packing or manufacturing operation.

  • Strong understanding and experience in logistics/warehousing/inventory management/transportation processes

  • Ability to measure, analyze, improve, and take a leadership role

  • Knowledge in root causes analysis/problem solving and the ability to implement and drive corrective actions and efficiencies

  • Management experience in logistics/warehousing/inventory management within the produce industry or related experience

  • Possesses the ability to learn techniques and acquire knowledge in a short period of time

  • Ability to multi-task and work under tight time lines and thrive on day to day operational pressure. Accountability and ownership are essential for this role

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to create and track KPI/metrics for the project.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Communicate with the Sales Manager and Packing House Manager as needed to ensure coordination of all shipping activities.
  • Communicate with other managers to ensure coordination of logistics with other functions such as purchasing and maintenance.
  • Implement and manage truck pickup schedules.
  • Manage trucker communication, bills of lading and pick tickets.
  • Manage relationships with freight forwarders and carriers.
  • Bid shipping business to achieve the lowest cost.
  • Rationalize the freight companies used for the most efficient and cost effective mix of logistics providers.
  • Ensure correct shipment of international orders and hazardous material orders.
  • Work with the office to ensure timely submission of paperwork relating to shipments including manifests, purchase orders, bills of lading, weigh tickets and invoices.
  • Assure all shipping documents for domestic and international shipments are done correctly.
  • Provide direction in all phases of international logistics and prepare and maintain information and documentary records.
  • Schedule inbound/outbound deliveries.
  • Request quotes from carriers and determine the best and most affordable shipment options.  Communicate with freight vendors; follow up on shipments, and coordinate transport issues with carriers/suppliers around the world.
  • Resolve obstacles that could potentially cause delay of shipments.
  • Prepare shipping documentation; confirm all international import/export documentation requirements prior to dispatch of shipments and verifies accurate documentation.
  • Work closely with customers to properly meet customer specific packaging, labeling, and notification requirements.
  • Responsible for completing all daily shipments and verifying that all orders have been processed and picked up by transportation carriers.
  • Verify product was delivered to the customers and effectively and timely communicate with Operations, Accounting, and Sales regarding status of orders.
  • Monitor supply of shipping materials required to execute export shipments.
  • Signs for materials received, checks goods against packing slips and seeks direction when materials do not match or are damaged.
  • Participates as required in training on regulatory issues affecting own area of work.
  • Brings regulatory compliance questions/ issues to the attention of management.
  • Assure all freight claims are filed on time, and paid out by carriers.  
  • Analyze damage to determine root causes and implement corrective action.
  • Maintain required shipping supplies and form requirements.
  • Maintenance and presentations of Warehouse Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
Qualifications: 
  • Excellent Communication Skills, working in a TEAM environment and must have basic knowledge of commerce.
  • Good knowledge of the English language, both verbally and written.
  • Good Knowledge of MS Office software.
  • Self-motivated, independent with a positive attitude.
  • Handles challenges and deadlines well.
  • Ability to work fast paced demand oriented style.
  • Will be working in an office & warehouse environment.
  • Willing to work long extended hours and weekends if needed.
