Regional Pack House Assistant Manager

Job Description: 

Village Farms is the leading vegetable greenhouse producer and supplier in North America. We are currently seeking a Regional Pack House Assistant Manager in West Texas. This individual will assist in managing all aspects of the pack house operations and communications. This includes but is not limited to all grading/packing operations, inventory control of packaging and the Food/Health and Safety programs. The Regional Pack House Assistant Manager will also be responsible for maintaining good communication with Production, Sales and Quality Assurance. 

This position will assume the responsibilities of the Regional Manager when he is unavailable with the exception of the Shipping/Receiving and Maintenance Departments; these departments will report the Director of Packing Operations if the Regional Manager is unavailable.

35%  Assists in managing the sorting, packing and labeling of all products produced at the facilities identified above.  All products must be packed with strict adherence to Food Safety policies and to customer and/or Village Farms specifications.

25%  Assists in managing and training the supervisors and staff in all pack house facilities. This includes ensuring all staff are trained in the correct procedures and policies for their job and that there is a constant focus on efficiencies and continuous improvement.

15%  Assist the Regional Manager in process improvement initiatives and ensure the Pack House Supervisors receive all necessary training and support needed.

10%  Ensures all maintenance deficiencies/requirements are recorded and reported to the Regional Maintenance Supervisor or his representative. This position will also ensure that labor is provided to assist the maintenance department when required.

10%  Assists in managing purchasing and inventory control for all packaging. This will include ordering supplies, maintaining a mid/max system and working with Sales and Marketing on new projects.

5 %  Works closely with the appropriate departments to ensure the Food Safety and Health and Safety programs are strictly followed and maintained as efficiently as possible.        

Supportive Functions:
In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the supervisor based upon the particular requirements of the company

  • Help evaluate changes in operations and equipment.
  • Work with Sales, Marketing and Production with regards to innovation of new products
  • Assist other Managers to achieve their goals.
  • Help evaluate quality problems and come up with viable solutions.

Other Duties:
Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.  Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established by Village Farms International, Inc. from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position.

Safety Requirements:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required when performing work duties that may have the potential of risk to your health or safety.  The Company will provide the required PPE.  Employees will be trained in the proper use and care of any assigned PPE.  It is your responsibility to report defective, damaged or lost PPE, or equipment that does not fit properly to your Supervisor.

Specific Job Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Must be competent with the software  programs required  for  company operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required with a good understanding of the English language.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and decision-making.
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish

Qualification Standards

Education:

  • College degree preferred but a combination of post secondary education and industry specific experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • 5 years industry specific experience in a Supervisory / Management position preferred
  • Knowledge of Mechanics and grading equipment is a benefit
