Transportation Coordinator/Broker

Job Description: 

Van Groningen & Sons, Inc. agricultural roots date back to 1922 while starting to focus its efforts in fresh fruits and vegetables in 1939.  Today, Van Groningen & Sons is still family owned and operated along with many others we consider family.

Van Groningen & Sons core business is as a grower – shipper specializing in melons, sweet corn, pumpkins and fall harvest ornamentals.  However, our expertise in transportation has enabled us to grow our logistics department to offer our transportation services to many additional customers. Our headquarters are located in Manteca, CA but our operations span across the Western 11 states.

Due to our vertical integration and our growing logistics department, we are in need of a transportation coordinator / broker.  This position will require one to work as a team to dispatch our own asset based, company owned trucks as well as coordinate all other transportation needs with outside carriers.  This position will also be required to work as a team to continue increasing our transportation services (asset-owned or brokered) to additional customers.  This position will work as a team with our Sr. Transportation coordinator and will report to our transportation manager as well as our sales manager.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Dispatch company owned trucks / drivers accordingly to ensure on time deliveries
  • Manage on file up to date carrier documentation
  • Negotiate fair and competitive rates with outside carriers
  • Tender load confirmations to trucks hired
  • Track and report back to appropriate parties with updates of truck status
    • Includes communication with drivers / trucking company dispatchers to ensure the load will be loaded and delivered on time.
    • Includes communication with shipping points to ensure truck arrives during scheduled shipping hours or scheduled appointment.
    • Includes communication with sales department to ensure truck delivers to customer during scheduled receiving hours or scheduled appointment.
  • Increase the amount of transportation customer accounts
  • Continue to grow our transportation brokerage sales
  • Identify, build and strengthen transportation resources (i.e. carriers)

Skills:

  • Experience with MS Excel, Word & Outlook
  • Strong analytical ability to make sound decisions and problem solve
  • Attention to detail
  • Self motivated with a high degree of determination
  • Ability to multi task and prioritize multiple urgent duties
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written & interpersonal)

Required Qualification:

  • Experience in transportation or related field associated with transportation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish)
  • Knowledge of the produce (fruits and vegetable) industries
  • Knowledge of Famous software
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations

Miscellaneous:

  • During the non-peak season (November – February), this position may work fewer than 40 hours per week.  During the peak season (March – October), this position may be required to work on Saturday as well as overtime with little extended time off.  After hours and on-call work will be required.
