Irrigation System Supervisor

Job Description: 

Talley Farms is a diversified family-owned farming operation that grows, packs and ships a variety of fruits and vegetables, including: bell peppers, wine grapes, napa cabbage, lemons, avocados, cilantro and brussels sprouts.  Brian, Todd, Ryan and Rosemary Talley are active in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of Talley Farms, following the company’s vision to strive for “Excellence in Everything.”

Talley Farms is seeking a skilled Irrigation Systems Supervisor who can provide management and oversight of the irrigation department, oversee maintenance and repair (MR) of ranch facilities, and provides support by procuring equipment and supplies for the Vegetable and Permanent Crops Division.

Requirements: 
  • Irrigation management experience.
  • A Bachelor's Degree with emphasis on engineering or irrigation.
  • Understanding of budget management and cost containment in irrigation and construction management.
  • Thorough understanding of hydrology, pumps, and irrigation technology.
  • Mechanical aptitude with general understanding of tractors and hydraulic systems.
  • General construction knowledge including earthwork, paving, concrete, framing and electrical systems.
  • Good math skills.
  • Ability to identify potential problems, make decisions and recommend viable solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Bilingual language skills are helpful and cultural sensitivity is critical.
  • Excellent technical skills in the Microsoft Office suite and generally high comfort level with voicemail, email communication systems. Ability to adopt new technologies as they emerge.
Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Provide engineering and management expertise to design, review others designs and implement irrigation and construction projects.
  • Purchase irrigation and nursery equipment and supplies that are most appropriate for the application at the best possible price.
  • Make decisions regarding ongoing irrigation operations, excluding irrigation scheduling, but overall management of the system.
  • Operate equipment as needed.
  • Look for ways to optimize irrigation operations.
  • Review invoices for purchases of equipment and supplies related to irrigation operations and repair and maintenance.
  • Interface with utility companies, government agencies, and San Luis Obispo County building department officials.
  • Secure building and other required permits for construction projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
