Job Description: 

Sun World is proud to be a renowned grower, marketer and breeder of premium varieties with a full line of tasty seedless grapes, sweet peppers, stone fruits and other distinctive fruits and vegetables.  We have over 10,000 acres of farming land and 950 domestic and international licensed partner growers. Plus, we manage the farming, packing, marketing and distribution operations for a large part of our U.S. grown produce.

We are searching for a Director of Human Resources to add to our team.

As the Director of Human Resources you will be responsible for developing and implementing Human Resources strategies, policies and programs.  The major areas you will be covering are organizational planning, organizational development, training, employee relations, compensation, payroll, benefits, and worker health and safety. You will create human resource practices and objectives that will provide a balanced program. You will also assist and advise senior management on human resource issues.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Formulates and recommends Human Resources strategies, policies and objectives.
  • Supervises Human Resource and Payroll department staff.
  • Determines and recommends employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale.
  • Design and implement programs and practices to increase employee retention.
  • Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting Human Resources function (e.g., OSHA, EEO, TEFRA, ERISA, Wage & Hour). Monitors exposure of the company. Directs the preparation of information requested or required for compliance. Approves all information submitted. Acts as primary contact with labor counsel and outside government labor related agencies.
  • Protects interests of employees and the company in accordance with company Human Resources policies and governmental laws and regulations. Approves all recommendations for terminations.
  • Directs a process of organizational planning that evaluates structure, job design, and manpower forecasting throughout the company. Coordinates activities across departmental lines. Evaluates plans and changes to plans. Makes recommendations to senior management.
  • Directs a process of organizational development that primarily addresses succession planning throughout the company. Coordinates activities across departmental lines. Evaluates plans and changes to plans. Makes recommendations to senior management.
  • Establishes wage and salary structure, pay policies, performance appraisal programs, employee benefit programs and services, and company safety and health programs. Monitors for effectiveness and cost containment.
  • Establishes standard recruiting and placement practices and procedures.  Interviews mid and executive-level candidates.
  • Establishes management training programs that address company needs.
  • Defines all Human Resources programs, and authority/responsibility of Human Resources and line management within those programs. Works with management to provide applicable employee training materials.
  • Oversees implementation of programs through Human Resources staff. Monitors administration to standards. Identifies opportunities and resolves discrepancies.
  • Provides input to select and coordinate the use of Human Resources consultants, insurance brokers, insurance carriers, pension administrators, training specialists, labor counsel, and other outside providers.
  • Conducts a continuing study of all Human Resources policies, programs, and practices to keep top management informed of new developments.
  • Directs the preparation and maintenance of such reports as are necessary to carry out functions of department. Prepares periodic reports to senior management, as necessary or requested.
  • Point person for all labor negotiations.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of significant problems that jeopardize the achievement of objectives and those which are not being addressed adequately at the line management level.
  • Additional responsibilities and projects as assigned by CEO.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field.  Master’s Degree preferred.  Minimum eight years of experience gained through increasingly responsible management positions within Human Resources.
  • Strong interpersonal, management, and leadership skills.
  • Conflict resolution, problem solving, and mediation skills.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to meet deadlines.  Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish is helpful but not required.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, perseverance, and multi-tasking.
  • Broad background with knowledge of organizational planning, employment, compensation, payroll, employee benefits, employee relations, and training and development.
  • Ability to identify legal requirements and government reporting regulations, and ensure that policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance.
  • Occasional domestic travel (mainly within California) will be required for visiting other company locations, training, networking, and recruiting purposes.
