We are currently looking for a Director of Health & Safety and Field HR to join our team in Yuma, AZ and throughout California.

As the Director of Health & Safety and Field HR, you are responsible for implementing Occupational Health Education and safety programs for all of the Scaroni Family of Companies (SFC) employees. Education and Training efforts include, but are not limited to, providing on-site Field Safety audits, and agricultural safety trainings for example: First Aid and CPR, Pesticide Safety Training, Heat Illness Prevention Training, Moving Equipment and Hand Safety.

You will serve as the staff specialist in safety and workers’ compensation by developing and implementing procedures that effectively control accidents and health exposures, and minimize OSHA citations and reduce workers’ compensation costs. You will also assume full responsibility for accident reporting and accident investigation.

In addition, you are responsible for field human resources, including but not limited to training, wage and hour, new hire processing, cash advances, payroll and all other human resources related issues.

Requirements: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Human Resources or other related degree, and a minimum of five years applicable Health, Safety and/or Human Resources experience.  Ten years related experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Knowledge and expertise in Safety and Human Resources Compliance laws, procedures and regulations.
  • Knowledge and expertise in Workers’ Compensation laws and practices.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines and work well under pressure.                                                                                                   
  • Proficiency in the English language, verbal and written and ability to communicate with team members and inter-company personnel in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, electronic mail, FAMOUS, and other word and spreadsheet programs. First Aid / CPR Train the Trainer Certification.
  • Pesticide Safety Train the Trainer Certification.
  • OSHA General Industry Certification desirable.
  • Requires extended travel throughout various locations in Yuma, Arizona and throughout California.
  • Must be willing to relocate to the Imperial Valley/Yuma Area in the Winter (Approx. Nov. - Feb)
Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Provide safety leadership to ensure all SFC are aligned with corporate safety vision and initiatives.
  • Model the highest standards for health, safety and human resources.
  • Develop and influence the organization to successfully implement programs and accomplish milestones and goals.
  • Ensure that information is communicated, understood and flows from management to employees, and from employees to management.
  • Conduct observations and teach to observe to improve overall safety performance.
  • Assist staff to understand Cal/OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance on handling Cal/OSHA compliance, inspections and citations.
  • Interface and negotiate with regulatory agencies on health and safety issues.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to line organizations on how to manage ergonomic related issues and make needed changes.
  • Research and evaluate new personal protective equipment (PPE), tool opportunities, and demands for potential products.
  • Investigate injuries in conjunction with line and staff personnel.
  • Notify executive management of pertinent details.
  • Evaluate hazardous conditions and practices and develop hazard control practices and programs.
  • Assist in communicating hazard control information and evaluate effectiveness of the control.
  • Guide and assist production, trucking and maintenance personnel at all locations with critical safety and health problems.
  • Oversee company accident statistics and make recommendations for correction of problem areas.
  • Plan and directs safety and industrial hygiene services to obtain optimum service.
  • Work with trade and professional associations to promote goals and objectives in the health and safety area that affect the company’s business.
  • Establish target areas and long-range accident prevention and cost-control objectives.
  • Keep apprised of developments in federal and state laws likely to affect the company.

Human Resources:

  • Responsible for ensuring the completeness and accuracy of all documentation in the “Red Binders”.
  • Update binders with the Grower list, location of pesticide records and Safety Data Sheets.
  • Supervise payroll check distribution and collection of checks not issued.
  • Supervise TIRAS Yuma/Imperial Valley.
  • Oversee Wage Statement distribution.
  • Supervise and/or investigate complaints, grievances, alleged harassment, theft, etc.
  • Supervise and oversee employee wage claims.

H-2A Responsibilities

  • Supervise H-2A (H-2A and domestics) contract and return signed acknowledgement to H-2A manager
  • Supervise MSPA (H-2A and domestics) and return signed acknowledgment to H-2A department

Crew Start-ups

  • Oversee crew start-ups ensuring crews are equipped with the needed tools and supplies (water coolers, safety vests, horns, etc.).
  • Oversee new hire/registration process.
  • Safety/HR/Miscellaneous Training, including but not limited to:
    • Pesticide Worker Safety (A-9 Series)
    • Heat Illness Prevention
    • Chalequero (Crew Safety Rep)
    • Tractor Driver Training and Certification
    • First Aid & CPR
    • Moving Equipment
    • Report all accidents
    • Harassment and Anti-bullying
    • Wage & Hour
    • Rest and Meal Periods

Food Safety Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee Food Safety Training for all new crews/crew start-ups.
  • Identify and address food safety non-compliance issues.
