Junior Production Manager - Watsonville

Job Description: 

The Jr. Production Manager performs the vital function of developing and leading the Reiter Affiliated Companies (RAC) regional wholly-owned farming operations in a manner that is technically innovative, strategically oriented, and economically successful. 

The Jr. Production Manager is directly responsible for all aspects of the production of RAC’s crops from soil preparation through harvest. The Jr. Production Manager will develop and lead a team of operational and harvest employees, to include: ranch manager, irrigator, tractor drivers, crew leaders, and harvesters; collectively contributing to the successful production of these crops. The Jr. Production Manager will use his/her horticultural, organizational, and leadership skills to deliver maximum fruit yield and quality results, at the optimum cost, in order to meet RAC’s business and supply objectives. 

In addition, the Jr. Production Manager is responsible for creating and fostering an attractive, productive and safe work environment for all regular and seasonal employees; and for developing a “bench” of employees capable of rising successfully through the organization as RAC’s regional and global operations expand. The Jr. Production Manager is responsible for building the production operation “from the ground up”, in support of RAC’s long-term growth objectives for the region. 

Approximately 70% of the Jr. Production Manager’s time will be spent on the farm, with the production and harvest teams, and with crops; 25% on administrative, business, and planning functions; and 5% on travel for interaction with other districts, conferences, etc.

Responsibilities & Duties: 

Farming:

  • Direct or coordinate an organization’s financial or budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments, or increase efficiency. 
  • Appoint department heads or managers and assign or delegate responsibilities to them. 
  • Analyze operations to evaluate performance of a company or its staff in meeting objectives or to determine areas of potential cost reduction, program improvement, or policy change.
  • Prepare budgets for approval, including those for funding or implementation of programs. 
  • Implement corrective action plans to solve organizational or departmental problems. 
  • Lead all aspects of crop production, from land development/soil preparation, through crop maintenance and production. 
  • Collaborate with appropriate production team to determine best irrigation, fertility, and pest control inputs to produce maximum yields and quality. 
  • Create and foster a culture of safety, performance and quality. 
  • Ensure compliance with all labor laws, prime audits or food safety, company policy and workers safety.

Production Team Leadership and Development:

  • Create and lead a team of production, harvest and overhead personnel that is motivated, empowered, and highly skilled in their areas of responsibilities. 
  • Provide an environment of maximum employee performance, job satisfaction, and career advancement. 
  • Ensure Ranch Managers are responsible for the development of harvesting supervisor for succession plan.  
  • Execute participation in weekly and monthly crop statement reviews.
  • Ensures and gives guidance to have a good communication with Driscoll’s to ensure accurate estimates of  crops and to deliver high quality to the cooler.

Harvest:

  • Assure an adequate supply of skilled and quality-oriented harvesters. 
  • Support Ranch Manager - identify, sources, and hire labor to develop and manage crews: ensures proper training and performance.

Business:

  • Assure maximum financial results. 
  • Create and utilize operational/financial budgets.
  • Manage budget variances. 
  • Provide periodic financial and production results to management.

 Organization Planning and Management: 

  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization. 
  • Ensure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of the Company. 
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization. 
  • Provide support to Ranch Managers by preparing meeting agenda and supporting materials. 
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services.
  • Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization’s mission and reflect the priorities of management. 
  • Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation execution and evaluation of special projects.
  • Determine staff requirements for organizational management and program delivery.
  • Review accuracy of the production data and any required crop information.  
  • Develop long-term planting plans in alignment with RAC’s strategic objectives for the PNW region.
  • Ensures that Ranch Mangers maintain a well-organized, clean and safe work environment.
  • Implement a performance management process for all staff, which includes monitoring the performance of staff and on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review.
  • Coach and mentor staff as appropriate to improve performance.
  • Discipline staff when necessary using appropriate techniques; release staff when necessary using appropriate and legally defensible procedures.

Risk Management:

  • Identify and evaluate the risk to the organization’s employees, property, finances and implement measures to control risk.

Procurement:

  • Transact and/or facilitate purchase of farm materials as needed.
  • Capital purchases in accordance with RAC budgets and guidelines.

Administrative Interaction:

  • Collaborate with and leverage local and corporate RAC administrative services in support of achieving operational and business objectives.
  • Review accuracy of the production data and any required crop information.

Marketer Interaction:

  • Collaborate with Marketer on crop planning, forecasting, and any other area that assures a mutually beneficial interface between the two organizations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent sitting

  • Energy to put in the hours of concentrated work necessary to achieve goals while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and presentation

Qualifications: 

BS or MS degree in horticulture or related fields, and/or minimum 5 years’ experience in agriculture production, to include:

  • Strong leadership and supervisor experience
  • Business driver knowledge
  • Understands and utilizes production, cost, and other management reporting tools
  • Computer fluency with MS applications experience (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish (Preferred)
  • Substrate experience 
  • Valid CA Driver License
