Job Description: 

Pismo Oceano Vegetable Exchange (POVE) is a grower owned cooperative and is the largest producer of Nappa Cabbage in North America.  POVE is located on the beautiful Central Coast of California, headquartered in Oceano.  We are committed to the family farms we service and our long standing customers within the industry.

Pismo Oceano Vegetable Exchange is seeking a Safety Director to join our team.  The Safety Director is responsible for upholding all safety programs related to the cooperative and its’ member growers.  The Safety Director will be communicating and working with the General Manager of the cooperative and also with our grower families to maintain their long standing tradition of agriculture along the Central Coast.

The Safety Director will report directly to the General Manager.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Conduct new employee safety orientations
  • Assist in identifying company safety and training needs.
  • Recommend measures to help protect employees from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
  • Coordinate safety tailgate meetings.
  • Conduct accident investigations to identify root causes and prevent such accidents from re-occurring.
  • Conduct safety and security inspections at cooling facility and ranches.
  • Participate in safety & security committee meetings.
  • Prepare and file all necessary paperwork to the appropriate agencies.
  • Perform assigned tasks as requested.

The Safety Director will implement and maintain the following safety programs:

  • Injury & Illness Prevention Program
  • Hazard Communication Program
  • Respiratory Protection Program
  • Lockout / Tag out
  • Hazard Assessment & Personal Protective Equipment Program (PPE)
  • Emergency Evacuation Program
  • First Aid, CPR
  • Alcohol & Drug Testing Program
  • Tractor Safety Program
  • Forklift Safety Program

Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years of related occupational safety or equivalent combination of education and experience working in agriculture and related safety operations.
  • Ability to work independently, within prescribed guidelines.  Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials and Cal OSHA regulations.
  • Strong problem solving and analysis skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills including giving presentations.
  • Ability to make recommendations to resolve problems or issues.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
  • Valid California driver’s license

Compensation:
    Compensation will depend on qualifications and experience.  Benefits include medical coverage,    
    401K, and vehicle to perform necessary job related duties.
