Produce Buyer with Organic and Retail Sales Experience

Job Description: 

Peddler's Son Produce Company sells produce, organics, dairy, desserts, dressings and specialty items to restaurants and grocery stores from Flagstaff to Nogales. Established in 1988, we built a strong foundation by offering great service, superior quality, honest prices and a loyalty to our customers and employees. Our 18,000 square foot warehouse is HACCP approved and SQF certified. We take pride in our positive reputation in the community and we are looking for a Produce Buyer with experience with Organics and Retail Sales to help us continue to provide quality products and service as we strive to be a produce industry leader.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Purchasing:  Negotiate with vendor/suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery.
  • Purchases produce following co-op policies (e.g., priority for local, organic.)
  • Research new or alternative sources of supply
  • Reports any opportunities for purchasing that are favorable to management.
  • Recording the produce buys from suppliers into computer system.
  • Ensure accurate, up-to-date PLU's. Enter new products and price changes promptly and accurately.
  • Abide by all the safety-training guidelines and operate within SOP stated in the Peddler’s Son Safety Manual.

  • Actively participating in the establishment of the strategic retail sales plan, sales budgets and direction for the company, utilizing a thorough understanding of market opportunities, company operational capabilities, industry trends and the overall strategic plan of the company.
  • Providing retail sales reports to senior management that include sales activities, pipelines and forecasts
  • Maintaining key customer relationships and increasing penetration by introducing new product lines
  • Developing and implement strategies for expanding the company's customer base
  • Partnering with the sales reps to deliver sales presentations to key targets
  • Actively engaging in client negotiations and retail sales efforts with key prospects and clients

 

Qualifications: 
  • Qualified candidates will have a BA/BS degree in related discipline or equivalent training & experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible experience in procurement, replenishment and forecasting with perishable products, preferably produce.
  • Experience in organic produce highly desired.
  • Must have good knowledge of fresh produce products, including seasonality and geography of fresh produce supply.
  • Experienced in product specification and quality parameters.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
  • Able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays, as necessary.
  • Strong negotiating & problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organized with strong multi-tasking skills; able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment & under pressure, meet deadlines & accomplish team objectives.
  • Strong customer-orientation.
  • The ideal candidate will be a strong leader and effective communicator with extensive sales experience in the agriculture industry. Experience in the produce packaging industry is highly preferred.
