Business Development Manager

Job Description: 

The Business Development Manager builds and expands existing company branded business while developing new business opportunities in assigned geography or with assigned accounts. May be assigned to direct, develop, teach / train and supervise merchandisers, sales representatives or broker representatives to execute and accomplish business plans with customers. 

Plans, directs and implements sales strategies for existing and potential clients based on company business plan for branded products. Tailors approach and tactics to fit within the client’s core competencies, as well as working with clients on new products that enhance and build their business.

Works with and advises their supervisor in the development of new and existing sales to achieve planned sales growth, profit margin, and market share. This position will interface closely with the Business Management group.

Requirements: 
  • Language skills with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Writes reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.  Effectively presents information and responds to questions from and in the presence of customers, top management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
  • Mathematical skills with the ability to work mathematical concepts such as calculations and volume.  Applies concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Calculates figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Applies concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Defines problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Interprets an extensive variety of information and make calculated decisions. Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Organizes time schedule and simultaneous projects.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • A valid driver’s license is required and proof of automobile insurance.
  • Current passport for travel outside the continental United States.
Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Plan, direct and implement account business plans to expand development of existing and new company branded business with specific customers or within specific markets.
  • Direct, develop and supervise merchandisers and / or sales representatives that are assigned to work with the BDM in support of “essential job function #1” listed above.
  • Develop expertise personally and with direct reports in communication and persuasive selling skills.
  • Execute retail store merchandising plans and adapt plans to maximize in-store presence and sales of company branded products.
  • Utilize internal and third party data to develop account specific business reviews for presentation to customers.  Present business reviews to customers with specific objectives to grow and expand company business.
  • Prepare written and oral reports for company meetings and for communication within the company and for the customer as needed.
  • Manage and monitor approved marketing activity for specific accounts. Responsible for allocated marketing spending and execution of customer specific marketing plans. Accountable for budget tracking and reports on spending versus budget as requested. 
  • Responsible for travel and entertainment expense management for personal and direct report (if applicable) business expenses.  Report on and is accountable for specific travel and entertainment budgets as outlined by the company.
  • Interface with business management, trade marketing, and supply chain management to support marketing and sales opportunities as well as determine client and vendor needs and assist in the direction for the marketing plans to enhance the achievement of overall sales efforts.
  • Maintain a leading edge awareness of changing business and market trends by attending trade shows, reviewing trade publications, seminars, competitor’s materials, and market research reports.  Disseminate this information to all necessary personnel to assure other impacted staff retains a high level of knowledge.  Report all significant competitive activity on a timely basis.
Education: 
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university
Qualifications: 
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in sales or equivalent combination of education and experience (experience in the grocery industry preferred)
  • Thorough knowledge of the company’s markets, products, sales approach and production processes 
  • Requires an extensive understanding and/or experience in the development of existing accounts and retail store execution.  Development of new business opportunities is a plus.
  • Extensive computer skills are a must. (Excel, Powerpoint, Word)
