National Account Manager

Job Description: 

Organically Grown Company, the Northwest’s Premier distributor of organic produce is seeking a National Account Manager to be based ideally out of its Portland location.  With warehouses in Portland and Eugene, Oregon and Kent, Washington, OGC serves over 200 natural and fine foods stores and restaurants located throughout western Oregon and Washington, as well as retail and wholesale accounts in other western states and Canada.

This position is primarily responsible for supervising a team of Account Representatives who manage a group of OGC accounts through the day to day business of providing information on the state of OGC’s product line, taking orders and processing adjustments, and the longer-term relationship building that comes from consistent success in the day to day as well as shared opportunities such as account visits, produce demos, trade events and farm tours.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Participates in the Account Management Council which:
    • Shares best account management and team building practices.
    • Drafts sales, merchandising and business development plans for consideration by management teams.
    • Determines overall staffing needs for the S&M department and works with OV/HR to carry out hires and promotions as well as determining development pathways.
    • Determines marketing and promotions budget; and deliberates with other functional leads to insure that account management service activities are carried out efficiently and effectively.  
  • Works closely with OGC’s Sourcing Teams and sales planning function to develop strong informed grower relationships which result in the securing of product that builds a high quality product line that meets the needs of OGC’s accounts and their customers. 
  • Maintain an effective and timely flow of communication about customer needs and product availability, including the facilitation of Program Sales.
  • Additionally, ensures responsibilities unique to the National Sales Account Team are carried out successfully, including:
    • Development of a National Sales Plan that addresses market development, account management, grower relationship management, and product line strategies such as processing and off-grade program sales specific to National Sales efforts.
    • ensures logistical support and oversight for inbound/outbound transit and off-dock sales; and participates in the creation of ongoing efforts to advance the welfare of small and medium sized growers.  
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ commercial produce experience with a proven track record, preferably in a capacity of maintaining multiple large accounts.
  • Successful at negotiating sales and pricing.
  • Ability to identify and analyze sales trends.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to build accounts through relationship management, sales reporting and account analysis, and sales presentations.
  • In-depth knowledge of produce varieties and organic trade and growing practices, sustainability movement and produce merchandising.
  • Knowledge of OGC’s product labels preferred. 
  • Previous experience working for an organization with aspirational sustainability goals desired. 
  • Excellent communication and listening skills are required in order to work effectively with all levels of OGC employees and customers.
  • Strong sales skills using telephone techniques and face-to-face presentation methods required.
