Senior Grower Accountant

Job Description: 

Ocean Mist Farms is one of California’s leading growers of premium quality produce.  We are the largest producer of artichokes in North America and produce over 30 other fresh vegetable commodities.  We are currently seeking a Senior Grower Accountant in Castroville, CA. This individual will report to the Grower Accounting Manager and assist the Finance Department with Grower Accounting. This professional level position will ensure accurate and timely payments to growers and will be responsible for the accounting of all grower-related costs, crop investment activities through grower settlements, and accurate account reconciliations.

The ideal candidate will be available full-time, year-round, Monday – Friday, including occasional Saturdays as required. You will work independently with limited supervision; occasional travel may be required to our remote facilities and surrounding areas.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Grower Accounting

  • Specialized grower accounting calculations, ledger postings and accounting functions and settlements.
  • Weekly calculations, system inputs and reconciliation of charges to the growers.
  • Provides guidance, support and direction to other functional groups pertaining to the grower accounting and inventory processes.
  • Submit correcting journal entries to the general accounting group for posting and prepare accounts receivable general ledger related account reconciliations.

Analysis

  • Prepare necessary analytical schedules to support the month end results.
  • Prepare requested management reporting and analysis as it relates to crop investments for the Finance and Production departments.
  • Prepare ad hoc reporting as requested by management as it relates to crop investments.

Process Improvement

  • Will work in cross-functional teams as required to improve the processes used to complete the responsibilities of the position and other areas in the company.
Skills: 
  • A self-starter, ensure delegated tasks are completed with minimal supervisor follow up.  Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team; identify and resolve complex problems; work in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment; and manage multiple high visibility projects.
  • Proactively communicate task and project updates to supervisor. Coordinate work flow effectively, efficiently, and neatly with a high level of attention to detail as well as superior organizational skills. Ability to learn new duties with minimal repetition.
  • Excellent analytical skills are an integral component in carrying out required duties and responsibilities associated with this position.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff as well as outside clients and vendors and maintain effective working relationships with all parties.
  • Office equipment to be used (not inclusive list): 10-key calculator by touch, telephone, computer keyboard, photocopy machine, fax, postage meter and other office equipment.
  • Majority of time spent working in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet. Work involves sitting for extended periods of time, walking, talking, kneeling, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Requires sufficient sight and hearing to perform all duties. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Strong ability to communicate verbally and comprehend verbal and written communication and instructions.
  • Must be able to stoop, reach, walk, and perform other physical activities associated with an office environment. May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry 30 pounds without undue physical exertion.

  • A minimum of 3 – 5 years of grower accounting experience is highly desired.
  • A minimum of 3 – 5 years of agricultural experience is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is highly desired; associates degree focused in accounting or finance is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet applications, (Microsoft Excel) is required. Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Word, Outlook, and Access) applications skills is desired.
