Organic Buyer

Job Description: 

Organic Produce Buyer negotiates and contracts for the purchasing of merchandise for resale. Buyer determines quantity and quality to be purchased, costs, delivery dates, contract conditions, sources of supply, and taking inventory.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Coordinates activities involved with procuring goods.
  • Confers with vendors to obtain product information, such as price, availability, and delivery schedule.
  • Selects products for purchasing.
  • Estimates values according to knowledge of market price.
  • Prepares purchase order.
  • Maintains manual or computerized procurement records, such as items purchased, costs, delivery, product quality, and inventories.
  • Discusses defective or unacceptable goods with quality control personnel, customers, vendors, and others to determine source of trouble and take corrective action.
  • May approve invoices for payment.
  • May expedite delivery of goods to customers.
  • Determines ad prices and weekly specials.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None
Education: 
  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in business administration; or five-year related experience and/or training in increasingly responsible office work involving purchasing; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills: 
  • Knowledge of organic produce and guidelines
  •  Knowledge of principles and practices of purchasing.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, equipment, and supplies.
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of supervision.
  • Ability to purchase necessary products in the right quality and quantity on a timely basis.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly.
  • Ability to keep records and make operational reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with customers, vendors, and other employees.
  • Skill in using a computer and various software programs.
