Director of Logistics and Transportation

Job Description: 

This position is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and maintaining economical and efficient transportation services for the company.  This position is also responsible for the supervision of the day-to-day activities of the Transportation department and Logistics department and all its respective management team.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Establish transportation delivery services to customers requiring a delivered sales program.  Ensure extremely high on-time arrival performance. Evaluate local shuttle service in Salinas to service nearby customers and those requiring consolidation at a third party cooler.
  • Responsible for transportation analysis and savings/cost opportunity analysis and the implementation and management of cost analysis measures. This position will plan and monitor budgets. Work with ship site location managers to improve operational and performance metrics. Provide information, recommendations, and coordinate project implementation for transportation and logistics cost reduction opportunities and identify mode optimization opportunities.
  • Provide guidance on import/export Freight Classification, Harmonization Coding, Country of Origin, NAFTA Certificates of Origin, and C-TPAT management and compliance.
  • Monitor and provide summary reporting on inbound and outbound core carrier compliance, low cost and lane award carrier compliance. Manage air and expedite freight expenditures through adherence of corporate approval process. Provide projections for inbound and outbound freight expenses by month and quarter. Ensure accurate forecasting of volume projections to core carriers.
  • Ensure timely submission of operation templates from carriers including a carrier scorecard, monthly reporting, and operational excellence projects. Disseminate monthly carrier scorecards and monitor overall performance against scorecard goals and expectations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Will manage 3-4 direct reports and 3-4 indirect reports. This entails directing and establishing day-to-day focus, work tasks, schedule; setting individual and departmental goals; conducting performance reviews; managing individual and department performance; hiring and termination process.

Required Education and Experience:        

At a minimum, this position requires a technical level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s level program in logistics, or related area, and 5 to 7 years of increasingly responsible experience within a mid-size to large company.

Advanced to Intermediate level Microsoft Excel skills required.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Powerpoint required.  Excellent analytical and verbal/written communication skills and the ability to work independently with accuracy and detail. Must be able to work under pressure with tight deadlines and be available before and after normal business hours to get the job done.

The successful candidate must demonstrate their ability to work with Customer Service, and across all Operations groups, for maximum customer order fill and optimal supply chain performance. Have great carrier and broker contacts and be experienced with LTL, FTL. Must have strong organizational skills, be extremely detailed and accurate, established negotiation skills, and enjoy problem solving.

Preferences:  Directly related experience in the produce industry and supply chain certification preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work in a fast-paced/high-pressure environment (working in collaboration with business and customer service, as well as distribution and production team). Critical thinking, sense of urgency, strong analytical ability, strong written and oral communication skills, extreme accuracy, detail oriented, knowledge of turn rates and FIFO, able to raise and effectively deal with issues at all levels of management.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.  Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Must be able to organize time, schedule and simultaneous projects.
