The Grocery People (TGP) is a dynamic and growing Western Canadian wholesaler responsible for delivering fresh groceries to independent retail stores, restaurants and other food establishments. We also purchase fresh produce for the CRS, through their joint venture with the Calgary Co-operative.
We have an exciting opening for a Produce Buyer in Calgary, AB, Canada.
As the Produce Buyer you will be responsible for the purchasing of various lines in the produce division, and will perform all tasks involved in the formation and administration of purchase orders within TGP, independent retails and the Co-op Retailing System. You will communicate with suppliers, transportation and quality control personnel to ensure we provide ethical business practices and consistent supply to our customer base.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintain product forecasts in order to achieve a target service level of 95%, while following company policy and procedures for all four distribution centers.
- Determine accurate ad forecasts (quantity required) and source opportunity buys weekly.
- Communicate product specs to suppliers and negotiate quality claims to minimize shrink in order to attain targets. Produce specs are the quality control standards of the produce for the Co-op Retailing System and independent retails. Produce specs are communicated to growers as developed.
- Work with the logistics team to ensure on time arrival of product.
- Working knowledge of the Canadian Inspections Agents requirements is required to ensure proper documentation is in place for cross border transportation of product.
- This position will deal with product being shipped into Canada from international growers and suppliers
Qualifications:
- Business Degree
- 3-5 years of experience in commodity buying (preference would be given to an individual with a produce background).
- Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of manugistics (computerized buying system for produce) is a plus.
- Enjoy working in our fast paced environment.
- Post-secondary education is a plus.
- Knowledge of imports a plus.
