Organic Farm Consultant

Job Description: 

Good Dirt Organic is a small organic farming operation in Northern California whose vision is to bring the highest quality organic fruits and vegetables to our community. We are committed to sustainable, organic farming practices for many reasons: to ensure the integrity of the soil, protect our water source, co-exist in harmony with the natural inhabitants and to grow the most delicious produce possible.

 As we expand our operations in beautiful Bella Vista, California, we are looking for an experienced Organic Farmer/Agronomist to assist and guide us in our growth and provide consultation on all aspects of our operation from seed to harvest.

The Organic Farm Consultant will assist with field research and recommendations in plant and soil fertility, irrigation, pest management and new technologies that can bring value and improvement to the farm operations. This may include the collection of soil, plant, and water samples, pest counts, and yield measurements. 

This position will initially be a temporary, part-time position, but could prove to be very rewarding for the right candidate who meets our requirements shown here. As our operation grows, this relationship and your role may grow too.

Requirements: 
  • Work in wet and damp environment. 
  • Exposed to outdoor given climate. 
  • Continuous standing, walking, use of both hands for grasping, pulling and pushing.
Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Develop and provide guidance in the setup and/or management of organic program.
  • Ensure that Organic System Plans and methods are in compliance with the USDA National. Organic Program (NOP), and international standards.
  • Discern the best ways to plant, harvest and cultivate plants.
  • Develop methods to control weeds and pests to keep crops disease-free.
  • Develop and execute pest management strategies.
  • Coordinate on-farm research work.
  • Inspect crops for pests and diseases.
  • Write procedures for Organic handling.
Education: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Ag Science or related field of study.
Skills: 
  • Good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Excel.
  • Familiar with farm machinery (small tractor, irrigation, water pumps, etc.) and able to make repairs as necessary.
  • Able to formulate various plans and possess the fortitude to carry out those plans.
  • Able to create and review various required and requested reports, summarize and come up with action plans.
  • Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Qualifications: 
  • Experience in commercial organic vegetable and fruit production.
  • Familiar with germination of seeds and greenhouse  procedures.
  • Knowledgeable with organic farming practices with hands on farming experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of previous related work experience.
  •  Demonstrated knowledge of soil, water management, fertilizers, irrigation, Ag technology, and disease pests.
  • Must have knowledge of HACCP and Food Safety Law.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality about all aspects of the job at all times.
