Job Description: 

Dandy Cooling Company is responsible for the West Coast Shipping operations for Duda Farm Fresh Foods. We own and operate facilities in Salinas, Oxnard, & Yuma. We also manage the shipping operations in Huron, at Dresick Cooling, during the spring and fall seasons.

Our Salinas and Oxnard facilities run during California’s summer growing season. Here we cool and ship a variety of produce items, from lettuce and leafy greens, to celery, broccoli, and cauliflower. During California’s winter months, our Oxnard facility is open and we operate our Yuma facility for Arizona’s growing season.

We are looking for a highly-motivated Safety Manager to join our team in Salinas, CA with travel to Oxnard, CA and Yuma, AZ.

As the Safety Manager you are responsible for formulating and directing Dandy Cooling policies to provide a safe and healthful atmosphere within the company and in the cooling, loading and shipping of produce.  You are also charged with developing and maintaining a system to assure that all products cooled, loaded and shipped by Dandy Cooling meet state, federal, OSHA and customer specifications and achieve superior quality and reliability levels.  In addition, you will be responsible for maintaining and implementing regulatory compliance programs as it relates to the Safety Program, training and OSHA standards.

Requirements: 
  • BA preferred but not required. Or Three (3) to Five (5) year years’ experience in safety, safety audits, managing and implementing safety training programs and implementation of federal, state, OSHA regulations and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and safety experience. 
  • Produce or agricultural experience preferred.
  • Well-founded experience in safety, audits, safety program administration and inspections.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety training, regulations and compliance; skilled in customer service and employee relations.
  • Working knowledge of efficient filing systems, office machines and equipment, including computer hardware and software.
  • Ability to apply and adapt practices and techniques to special circumstances; to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, peers, management, superiors, consultants and others.
  • Must be able to adjust tasks and focus with poise, and in accordance with changing deadlines and priorities. 
  • Ability to travel to Oxnard, CA and Yuma, AZ, 2 to 5 days at a time or as needed.
  • Proficient bilingual skills (Spanish/English) – reading, writing, and speaking preferred.
Responsibilities & Duties: 

Compliance, Policy, Administration and Documentation

  • Evaluate hazards within the facility for safety, health, and environmental risks.
  • Develop health and safety procedures and programs for all departments and monitor safety compliance to reduce risks.
  • Maintain contingency plans, including fire prevention and procedures for controlling hazardous spills in accordance with government regulations and insurance company requirements.
  • Supervise maintenance of material safety data sheets so they are accessible at all times according to state and federal regulations.
  • Develop inspection policies and establish regular inspection schedules.
  • Maintain EPA records of hazardous waste, air emission permitted and water pollution discharge, as well as industrial health monitoring and records of employee hazard exposure according to OSHA regulations.
  • Develop, maintain and update Dandy Cooling policies for safety standards, emergency preparedness, IIPP, safety training etc.

Safety Program Training

  • Identify, as qualified, legal requirements and governmental reporting regulations affecting the safety and quality assurance functions (e.g., Federal, State, OSHA, etc).
  • Supervise training sessions for emergency preparedness, confined spaces, electrical safety, machine guarding, fall protection and forklift safety.
  • Experience in developing, creating and presenting new safety programs using compliant information and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate to large or small groups in English and Spanish to ensure the transfer of knowledge and compliance with Dandy Cooling Safety Training policies as well as federal and state regulations.

Management

  • Meet with vendors, customers, quality representatives and company personnel to discuss and resolve quality and safety issues as required.
  • Maintain accurate personnel safety file documentation.
  • Coordinate and conduct Safety Committee meetings.
  • Schedule and coordinate OSHA training programs as directed.
  • Use equipment and material in a safe and acceptable manner, follow established safety procedures, use appropriate safeguards, and observe common sense rules of safety in all on-the-job activities.
  • Monitor professional literature and attend seminars to stay current with governmental compliance requirements.
  • Assist the Operations Manager as needed.

Employee Relations

  • Refer potential employee relations problems to upper management as necessary for handling.
  • Seek out models, suggest and implement innovative and cost-effective employee relations programs to increase intra/inter departmental teamwork and morale.

  • Must be computer literate and have experience with Microsoft – PowerPoint, Word & Excel.
  • Must have the ability to quickly learn new procedures and specific software.
  • Working knowledge of efficient filing systems, office machines and equipment.
  • Must be able to make sound independent decisions based on available data.
  • Must be able to work with a variety of personalities in an effective manner.
