Job Description: 

A highly successful nut grower-processor in the Central Valley of California is searching for a Controller to join their team.

The Controller is responsible for all aspects of accounting, finance and information systems.  This position develops and manages the financial well-being of the organization by providing insight, operating reports and accounting services. Using independent judgment and discretion, the Controller maintains compliance with company policies, procedures, accounting/finance standards and current federal, state and local laws. 

The Controller plays a critical role in supporting growth, improving current operations and positioning the organization to meet financial objectives and drive sustainable value. The position will require the ability to successfully manage business and employee relationships and to motivate people in a dynamic environment. The company is seeking a strong leader to analyze, implement and manage improvements in all areas of the organization. Position Reports to: 
The Controller reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Administrative Officer (CFO). This position is responsible for two direct reports.

Requirements: 
  • An undergraduate degree in business, accounting or finance required; CPA, CMA or MBA a plus.
  • Must have a minimum of five to seven years of progressive financial and accounting responsibilities. An understanding of food, nuts and/or perishables production is highly desired.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of US GAAP.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (includes advanced), Microsoft Office and Microsoft Word.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer and financial systems; a working knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics SL a major plus.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Direct the monthly and annual financial closing process, including analytical review of the results compared to budget.
  • Direct all financial, accounting and analysis functions of the company in accordance with all statutory requirements and appropriate financial management practices including those functions relating to payables, receivables, records keeping, cost accounting, collection activities and taxes.
  • Provide reporting and financial analysis support to sales and plant production departments as needed.             
  • Insure procedures are in place to adequately protect company assets. These include controls within area of supervision (segregation of duties, etc.) as well as those to monitor the presence and condition of all company assets (cycle counts of inventory, determination of excess/slow moving inventory, etc.).
  • Provide training, coaching and counseling to direct reports. The Controller will act as backup to the direct reports.
  • Ensure proper and accurate allocation of direct labor related costs to cost centers.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations for improved profitability.
  • Manage the annual target setting and budgeting processes to ensure fiscal stability.  Assist the CFO in the implementation and maintenance of a continuous forecasting for a determined time period.
  • Evaluate the overall organization to determine strengths and weaknesses; provide recommendations for all key areas involving accounting, finance, IT and corresponding programs.
  • Leverage resources of the financial group in evaluating all aspects of The company’ performance.  Provide timely and accurate preparation and analysis of budgets, operating costs and financial trends on a monthly, quarterly and yearly timeline in order to assist the CFO and other senior executives in performing their duties.
  • Assist the CFO in the preparation of external reports and returns including income tax returns, property tax returns, various U.S. government agency census data requests, etc.
  • Provide support to CFO for audits/reviews conducted by outside accountants, governmental tax entities and insurance carriers.
  • Support the CFO in asset management strategies, cash flow forecasting, cash management and financing strategies.
  • Maintain accounting and reporting spreadsheets and send reports to contract and custom growers.
  • Assist the CFO and Office Manager in performing level one and two audits of all grower crop deliveries.
  • Support various special projects as required.
  • Distribute daily sales and production information to the appropriate departments.
  • Provide sales and production analysis to the sales and production teams as needed.
  • Any other duties that may be required, based on business needs.
