Tasteful Selections is a specialty potato company whose mission is to delight the consumer with great tasting, easy to prepare, inspirational products. We are a vertically integrated farming operation which grows, packs and markets our products.

We are seeking a Vice President of Farm Operations in Arvin, CA.

The Vice President of Farm Operations is a key element to our site executive leadership team, this position has significant autonomy and responsibility for managing the production of over 4,000 acres of our product.

This position will report directly to the President of Tasteful Selections and will work closely with the members of the site leadership team including the President, VP of Plant Operations and VP of Finance/Accounting. The VP of Farm Operations leads one of two major divisions of the company, Farming and Production, which must work in concert with Plant Operations, Packaging and Shipping. This position directly manages the Farm Managers, Harvest Manager and Planting Manager as well as providing work direction to the Agronomists.

Requirements: 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Ag Business, Agronomy or related agricultural or science based field of study with Master’s degree or MBA highly preferred
  • 5+ years’ experience managing agricultural programs over a large geographic region with multiple crop sites as well as ability to travel up to 50% of work time to manage sites
  • Self-directed individual who can take the lead on issues to identify and implement solutions with team input
  • Demonstrated strategic management of irrigated crops
  • Demonstrated financial management experience and budgeting skills
  • Adaptability to changing situations and have the ability to perform multiple tasks with multiple priorities
  • Able to foster accountability, good communication, and excellence in employees
  • Able to work under pressure and work with all types of employees
  • Proficient in the use of Windows based computer programs (Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and a general aptitude with software systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to train and work with operational personnel on the farms
  • Superior organizational and project management skills and experience leading and managing people
  • Ability to acquire and hold a valid driver’s license and successfully pass vehicle insurance verification
  • Candidates must be eligible to work unrestricted in the U.S. without company sponsorship to be considered for this position
  • Ability to comprehend, read, write and communicate proficiently in English and interact with all levels of the organization

Preferred Position Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Ag Business, Agronomy or related agricultural or science based field of study or MBA highly preferred.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • The primary responsibility is to efficiently manage the multi-site farm operations of the region and ensure excellent customer and vendor satisfaction so that the company is able to meet the financial goals and objectives. Primary responsibilities include:
  • Managing farm operations budgeting, forecasting and performance to expectations
  • Working closely with the President and VP of Accounting/Finance to review financial performance of the farm operations programs to maximize revenue and improve gross profit margins
  • Managing commercial baby potato production through directing and leading all area Farm Managers
  • Ensure company policies and procedures are followed by each farm and department (Operations, Safety, HR, etc.)
  • Attract, retain and motivate farm operations staff
  • Report and share information with management and corporate executives to ensure they are kept fully informed of regional activities

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to providing managerial oversight on key farm operations, especially:

  • Overseeing soil sampling and fertilizer recommendations
  • Development and execution of pest management strategies
  • Field scouting schedules and directing necessary adjustments to crop management plans
  • Monitoring soil moisture and irrigation schedules, irrigation system application and uniformity
  • Seed handling and cutting as well as planter spacing accuracy
  • Chemical application (coverage and timing)
  • Quality Assurance including plant tissue and soil sampling during the growing season for fertility management, test digs to estimate yields, size profile and monitor quality, variety record-keeping and monitoring of bruise-free handling during harvest
