Food Safety and Regulatory Compliance Supervisor

Job Description: 

Under direct supervision of the Director of Quality Assurance, the Supervisor shall assist in implementing and supervising Food Safety and Regulatory Compliance Programs with a focus on document review and document management. The Supervisor will be a crucial component in the success of Backyard Farms' "3P's" (people, plants and performance) and will work to grow our nationally-renowned Food Safety Program.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record in knowing and recognizing potential food safety issues while working to develop solutions and improvements through data collection/evaluation, communication and implementation. S/he will have the integrity to reinforce processes and procedures developed by Backyard Farms to ensure the highest level of product safety and quality, while possessing the ability to multi-task, function within a team dynamic and promote company culture, attitude and expectations.

Position Reports to: 
Director of Quality Assurance
Requirements: 
  • High School diploma or equivalent; BA/BS preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in the quality assurance/agricultural/food safety field.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of food safety experience, with intermediate/advanced level experience in HACCP, USDA, or FDA preferred.
  • Licensed water system operator
  • Licensed Private Pesticide Applicator
  • HACCP Manager certification
  • Certified Practitioner in Implementing SQF Systems
  • Certified training in HACCP and GMP’s
  • Food Defense training preferred
  • Experience supervising non-exempt employees a plus
Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Supervises established food safety and related regulatory programs; keeping apprised of new or developing regulations that are relevant to our business.
  • Develop and maintain documentation such as SOP’s, as well as maintenance of manuals, policies and procedures as relate to any food safety concerns to ensure compliance with regulatory and food safety programs as well as company standards. Conduct facility food safety audits as well as manage third party audits
  • Take swabs and collect fruit samples for laboratory analysis to support environmental, sanitation, food safety and regulatory programs. Review and verify laboratory analysis documentation is maintained.
  • Maintains and supervises recall and traceability programs, investigate customer complaints.  Maintains Operational Risk Management and Food Defense programs
  • Supervises Waste Stream Management and Recycling programs.
  • Supervise Drinking Water Program and document testing for Maine Drinking Water Program compliance
  • Verify and validate the established Food Safety and Quality Assurance System and GLOBALG.A.P. Programs.
  • Develop and provide training for food safety and quality requirements for both greenhouses.
Skills: 
  • Full understanding and working knowledge of GAPs
  • Full understanding of DHS Food Defense requirements
  • Previous experience with CGF, GlobalGAP, SQF, GFSI, Primus, BRC and/or USDA Harmonized  audits desirable
  • Able to work independently, unsupervised and able to self direct job responsibilities
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be flexible with work hours and days
  • Know and understand thoroughly job specific applications of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • Know and understand thoroughly job specific applications of USDA and FDA, DEP and DAG regulations as they apply to quality and food safety.
  • Understand company Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points
  • Possess normal to excellent manual dexterity and motor skills, good eye-hand coordination, excellent listening and comprehension skills, possess and demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
  • Detail oriented, and possess strong computer skills, including MS Office and Excel

Working Conditions: 

  • Multiple environments including office setting, frequent work between greenhouses and packhouses. 
  • The ability to lift fifty pounds, twist/bend at the waist, be comfortable with heights of 10 – 15 feet while working on raised trolley platform,  have good vision, comfortable around bumble bees, and be able to work in varied temperatures.
